This piece is extremely versatile and endearing. First of all, everybody likes Giraffes, it exudes maternal love, there is a high level of fine-art detail.....and last but not least, Black & White goes with anything.
Original Medium: Black ink
Technique/Process: "Scratchboard technique"
To get more of an illustrative feel, I decided to mix things up a bit. Where I would normally "add" mid-tones and shadows to a painting or drawing, this time I chose a scratchboard technique where I literally scratched away black ink to reveal the white highlights of the paper underneath. First I painted the entire giraffe subject matter in all black archival ink. Once dry, I carefully scraped out the fine details with an exacto-knife. While it was tedious, it was a really great effect and allowed for more much more detail work (and not to mention, it was kind of therapeutic, ha).
